SCALE ON
SAGO PALMS

*** Hurricane Recovery Information ***

Sago palms are not actually true palms; they are cycads. Most Sago palms are susceptible to the Cycad Aulacaspis Scale pictured below.  The Cycad Aulacaspis Scale is an insect that attaches itself to the plant. Untreated, the Sago palm will become severely infested with this scale and become completely covered and eventually killed by the scale.

There is treatment for this problem, but it is not cost effective. The treatments need to be continued on a monthly basis and it is a constant battle to keep the scale away. For this reason, Palm Tree Doctor recommends removing any Sago palms that are infested and replacing them with one of the following three plants, none of which are susceptible to the Cycad Aulacaspis Scale at this time.

One plant that can be used in place of the Sago palm is called the Cardboard Palm (Zamia furfuracea).  This plant is related to the Sago palm and is also not a true palm.

Another plant that can be used is a Florida native known as Coontie (Zamia floridana). This plant tends to stay small and is a good choice in a tight area.

The third plant that is a good replacement is Giant Dioon (Dioon spinulosum). This plant gets larger than the other two and needs a bit of room.
